
Who is Late Romantic?
Late Romantic is a romancier, writer, editor, librarian, and speaker based between London and Oxford, UK and Erfurt, Germany. Her creative work is published under C. E. Mahrey (a version of her full name) and her academic work is published under Kitty Shaw. She gained her BA in English and MA in Comparative Literature with an emphasis on German from Birkbeck College, University of London and is currently working on her PhDย applying Romantic theory to bestselling 20th and 21st century texts at Oxford Brookes whilst teaching there. She is the co-founder of The Sylvia Plath Society and a member of the London Library.
What is Late Romantic?
Late Romantic is writing and presentations about culture of all kinds – pop & academic, European, British or American, old & new.
Late Romantic is a publishing project, looking forward to bringing beautiful artefacts to people who love such things.
Late Romantic is studying in libraries with wood panelling or mezzanines; annotating books with fountain pens; wearing fine lipstick; haunting Bloomsbury and St James’s.
I named my project Late Romantic for some of my favourite writers – Heine, Hugo, Pushkin, the Brontรซ sisters, – who, I believe, saw the beauty of Romanticism and wanted to abide by its principles whilst also being aware of the world they lived in. To know that Romantic ideals are doomed, that the world has changed, and yet choose to pursue the poetry, have your politics and aesthetic both informed by artโฆ Late Romanticism is intense and irresistible.
